The word “hackamore” is derived from the Spanish word jáquima, meaning headstall or halter, itself derived from Old Spanish xaquima. Commonly referred to in it’s own right as a Bosal, it is made from braided rawhide and sits around the bridge of the horses nose. Attached are the reins, called a “Mecate” and together the bosal and mecate make up the Hackamore.

An incorrectly fitted bosal hinders precise and subtle communication from the rider’s hands and can cause pain and discomfort to the horse if presses on the sensitive facial nerve. A bosal should fit ‘like a glove’ and be evenly touching all around the horse’s face. The horse should be able to open its mouth and the bosal should not be so tight as to prevent the horse from chewing.

During this clinic you will learn how to correctly fit a hackamore to your horse and receive theory and practical training of how to correctly use and get the most out of working with a Hackamore. It’s a fantastic tool to make the rider more conscious of his or her seat, legs and body signals.

If you’ve been wanting to try your horse in a Hackamore or learn more about bitless riding then this clinic is for you. If you’re already riding in a Hackamore this clinic will help you refine and progress your skills.

We will also discuss and show other styles of bitless bridles including side-pulls.

We will have different bosals and mecates to try during the clinic and available to purchase.
